Let’s “be hip”

Being a girl who is on her 20s and tries to experiment with fashion and still trying to figure herself out is something I would likely to describe myself.  But when people ask me about my “fashion statement” or my “fashion inspiration/s,” I would mostly end up answering “anything goes” or “I don’t particularly follow any trends.. I create my own..” –that sort of hypocrisy. At least, for the past years that’s what I’ve been telling people.

Just late last year, I’ve finally decided to actually fall into a specific kind of “fashion culture.” Actually, I’m not only talking about fashion here. I’m talking about the personal style that I’m adopting and why I’m taken to it.

I follow/read a lot of blogs.. no certain genre.. and the words “indie” and “hipster” have always caught my attention. So I did my research and found myself deleting my Flo Rida, Rihanna, Chris Brown, etc. playlists in exchange for Bon Iver, Lykke Li, Feist, She & Him, Radiohead, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Florence + the Machine, and other indie bands.

hip·ster (hpstr)
n. Slang
Hipster (also referred to as scenesters[1]) is a term frequently used to refer to a subculture of young, recently settled urban middle class adults and older teenagers. Usage of the term reappeared in the 1990s and persists to the present. The subculture is associated with independent music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility, and alternative lifestyles.

In the 1990’s, the hipster term came back strong in communities of young, middle-class urbanities. The dress was usual a causal mixture of grunge, jeans and tee-shirts that promoted Indie bands.

Naturally, wanting to “be hip” falls foul of the irony that no hipster would own up to. Being a hipster isn’t something you consciously strive for. It’s supposed to be a natural state, not something contrived.

But then again…. everytime we make deliberate choices about the image we present to the world, we’re working on it, even subconsciously. So I started with the indie music.. then everything followed. On this post, I will allow you guys to take a peek of my closet. No, I am not showing my whole wardrobe, just a couple of basic hippie clothes that I own.

Note: Hipster fashion is not easy to copy. Self-identity is heavily tied into what being a hipster is all about, however you will seldom find a hipster who accepts this title readily.

TOPS: bodycons, corsets, cropped, bodysuits, & vintage tees.

Hipster trends tend to change quickly, and when that trend is copied by others those in this life-style find new ways to express themselves.

BOTTOMS: vintage, ripped, high-waist, tattered

More than one type of hipster exists with a different lifestyles and clothing choices.

Basically, hipsterism is a style that defines all that you feel matters right now. Which goes back to my definition of style, “anything goes!” HAHA

Bottomline is, Hipsters are those people in the world who start movements in fashion and policy without commercialism. In short, the hipster is a title that the world assigns to the people in our society who are brave enough to do their own thing, without concern for what the rest of us think.

So find your thing… find that thing that you love and do it for the rest of your life. 🙂

Story of my life..

whaddup mah peeps!! So yesterday, I experimented with my hair again. Dyed it in flaxen 😉

I was actually aiming for golden brown or ash blonde locks.. But it turned out to be okay. Still happy 🙂

And today, I had food and retail therapy because I’ve been spending months just inside the house. Long story short, I took an off-sem so I basically have 6 months of “vacation” til I go back to school.

After dyeing my hair yesterday, I finally realized that my brows need the pampering they deserve. So I went to the salon today and had it threaded and re-shaped 🙂 By the way, it was really painful!!!!!!! The last time I had threading was two months ago. I was basically crying the whole time HAHA
Also, I went around the mall by myself so I ended up buying whatever I find pleasant to my eyes. One day millionaire. Now I’m broke and back to bumming.

Happy dappy 🙂 was satisfied with my brows! I even gave tip to my err.. what do you call them? “stylist” HAHA

Then I went to Bo’s coffee shop to meet up with a good friend of mine, Christine and talked for ours. Then on the way home (she gave me a ride), we dropped by our plaza to eat street food. Their kwek kwek (or Quail’s egg) isn’t too yummy! But it was my first time to eat fried isaw –chicken’s intestine  (I used to eat only the grilled ones). Twas really good!
No pics to show by the way since I was busy eating HAHA

There you have it! I’ve been missing in action coz I went to my mom’s hometown, Dipolog City. Just got home last Sunday. Will make a separate post about my trip.

Bye for now.

Do It Yourself! Distressed shorts tutorial by Nica Ubas

After a long hiatus, I am back with something I’ve been dying to do ever since!
So without anymore long introduction, let’s get this DIY distressed shorts tutorial started.

note: I apologize for my nails. Please just ignore it HAHA I have this bad habit of waiting for the nail polish to chip off before I get them done. Also, i’m trying to make the captions as simple and as understandable as my brain can handle.

Ready?

1..

Things you will need: Scissors, blade or cutter, needle, and of course your choice of shorts or jeans you wish to cut and distress.

The picture above is actually my shorts which is too long so i cut it off  and showed the white threads for more vintage-y look. If you wanna do the same thing, I will show you how..

Choose or get your reference shorts so you’ll know how long you’ll cut. Make sure to do it slowly and don’t cut directly. That way you’ll avoid cutting it too short. (POKPOK shorts aren’t cool especially when your butt is showing)

If you want to show those white threads like mine, all you need to do is run the scissors to the right and vice versa.

NOTE: do NOT cut! just run it.

Don’t worry if you don’t get many white threads. If you’ll wash your shorts eventually it will all come out.

Next thing is to figure out where to rip your shorts. Be sure to have it above the pocket or else your underwear or legs will show when you wear it.

Using the cutter or blade, cut a line on where you have decided to rip.

Turn your shorts and locate the tear.

Using the needle, pull off the white threads depending on how much you want.

When you’ve pulled a lot of white threads, the blue threads will thicken so you have to cut it off or you may leave an inch of it before ripping another part of the shorts

taaaahdaaaah! that’s what I meant when I said you can leave some of the blue threads

I made 3! 🙂 I don’t want to distress the other one more because I intend to put on studs (which I will of course write a different post about it)

I hope you guys enjoyed! 🙂 and if you wanna try it out, lemme know how it goes! 🙂

MAC Blankety lipstick

Helloooooooo everyone! 🙂 This is going to be my first post for 2012!
I’ve been out of town so I apologize for not being able to update my blog. I promise to make it up to you by finishing the pending posts on my drafts.

Moving on, YEHESSS! I’m doing a beauty review!

When my mom went to Singapore, she bought this MAC Blankety lipstick for me which became my all-time favorite. Since I always wear eyeliner (to hide my bulging eyes), I’d always have to wear lighter lippie because of my strong peepers. And I find this the perfect one to use!

Yep, that’s how it looks. Please just ignore my big forehead, ginormous eyebags  and smudged eyeliner. HAHA

Famous Filipino stylist Liz Uy is right!

nakakaganda ang Blankety! promise!

I wanna be FOREVER XXI

Sooo excited to get this post published because I know a lot of people love Forever 21 like me.

If this picture is familiar to you then you might have read the previous post. These are my mom’s birthday presents from F21 SG ❤

You can stand under my umbrella..ella..ella..eyy..eyy..eyy 🙂

Mom knows how obsessed I am with nail polish and anything else that’s got to do with it. So she bought me a pedicure set and 2 hues of F21 nail lacquer.

Just last month, November 14, Forever 21 PH opened a branch in Cebu! So my friends and I went to the opening even if we were all broke (I only had 50 pesos in my wallet that time and nothing more)

L-R: my CDU friends El, Mary Fel, Essa & Aiken
Was really upset that time because I wasn’t able to take pictures :/
My phone died minutes after this shot

Anyway, my mom arrived days after my birthday and I took her to the newly opened F21 since she needs to buy winter clothes for my dad (My dad is a stay in employee at Athens, Greece and he rarely goes out to shop for himself).
Of course I took a couple of stuff for me HAHA 😉

Newest turban being worn. ❤

I was really freaking out when I found  a row of gel eyeliners. Would you believe that it’s only 95php per tube? so I bought 2 since I’m going to be in Mindanao for quite a while and I’m sure it’s is going to be sold out in less than a week. I was dying to buy the one in Maybelline but it’s actually 400 bucks per tube.
Thanks F21 for this cheap bargain! ❤

Just last Saturday, I finally got my package from my close friend, Phyllis who has already moved to Miami years ago.

My new babies are very well taken care of. THANKS PHYLL!! ❤

So what if I can’t afford Topshop. I wanna be forever 21 anyway 😉 HAHA
And just recently, one of the most famous European brands, BERSHKA opened in Manila. And to honor that, I’m wearing a Bershka skirt right now haha.
Will cross my fingers for H&M  to open here in the Philippines too! But I tweeted them and they replied there are no plans yet 😦

Oh well hope you did not get bored with this post. More of Forver 21 soon!
